The 1950s Heatwave

There is something about a summer day when the heat becomes almost theatrical — the glare, the striped umbrellas, the sunglasses, the feeling that everyone has surrendered to it.

That was the mood behind The 1950s Heatwave.

I wanted her to have that wonderful confidence of old holiday photographs: glamorous without trying too hard, completely comfortable in her own world. The red and white stripes create all this movement around her, while she simply leans back into the sun.

I’m drawn to moments like this because they don’t need to be important to be memorable. Sometimes it is a colour combination, a posture, a personality or simply the feeling of summer that makes me want to paint.

For me, this work is about warmth, freedom and that delicious feeling of having nowhere else you need to be.
